taster session picHAVE - A  - GO SESSIONS

A Have-a-go session is exactly what is says on the tin. Anyone can book a place on our website  and come along and try their hand at shooting with a bow and arrow under supervised conditions. There will always be one qualified coach present.

These will be short half hour sessions on a rolling basis over an afternoon, so you will need to arrive and depart promtly. There will be a nominal £10 charge per participant payable on line when booking.

If anyone is interested to further developing archery skills, they can discuss with the coach whether or not progression to a Taster Session would be an appropriate next step.

A Taster Session is where participants are taught range safety and a basic T-Draw technique using bare bow style. The aim of a taster session is to give an opportunity to decide about progressing to a full course. However, for under 18 year olds, the final decision for this would rest with the attending coach for that taster session.

HEIGHT RESTRICTION- irrespective of age, participants must be a minimum height of 150cm or 5ft

10-16 year olds must have attended a Have-a-go sesssion and have been recommended to attend a taster session by the attending coach and must have an adult in attendance with them at all times. We do encourage adult relations of this age whoo would be attending to book on the taster session themselves and have some fun to gegther!!

16 year olds and over can apply independently through our website booking system.

Taster sessions take place on a Saturday afternoon - 14:00 till 16:00, a week or two before up and coming full courses which gives participants time to decide if they want to book onto a full course of training.

  • to assess a paticipants capbilities through direct coaching in T-Draw technique. For under 16s this would form the basis of a recommendation whether or not to progress to a full course
  • to inform parents of the finacial and time commitments required if their child was recommended to continue to a full course
  • to give over 18s the opportunity to decide whether they want to progress to a full course

There is a flat rate of £30 for each participant unless a Family Discount of £5 per Junior is applicable when shooting with a Senior family member at the same session

To ensure adequate safety and maximum shooting time, each Taster Session is limited to 8 participants. When this limit is reached, the booking system will automatically close.

BOOK AND PAY ONLINE ONLY THROUGH THE WEBSITE EVENTS CALENDAR. Your place is not secured unless payment is made with your booking. No cash or cheque transactions are conducted.

Training FAQs

I've never shot before - what's the best course for me?

Either one of our Taster Sessions or a Beginners Course would be ideal.

You can even try a Taster Session and if you like it and want to continue learning, join one of the Beginners Courses and finish your training without waiting, as long as there are spaces left.

How do I book a place on a course?

  • Visit the CMO website and register for a user account
  • Go to the course date on the event calendar or use the up and coming courses links on the right hand side of the training pages
  • Select the session you want to book and follow the booking and payment instructions
  • Your booking will be automatically confirmed on receipt of payment
  • We do not make tentative bookings due to the high demand for places.

What if I have a visual or hearing impairment?

Archery is an inclusive sport and we will endeavour to accommodate archers with any disability.

This is why we ask you to state any known impairment when you book your place, so that we can make appropriate provision.

All of our coaches have been fully trained to help course members with a range of needs including visually and hearing impaired and we will to do all we can to accommodate you.

Do I have to join CMO Bowmen when I have completed my course?

The simple answer is no. When you have satisfactorily completed your 12 hours of tuition, you will be presented with an Archery GB certificate saying that you are now safe and competent to shoot using simple T-Draw technique.

You can take this certificate to any AGB affiliated club in the UK and apply for membership.

Of course we hope you will choose to join CMO Bowmen, but that choice is entirely yours!

Do I need my own equipment?

All the equipment that you will need for training is provided on the course.

As part of the Beginner's Course we give you advice about what equipment to buy and where to buy it, should you wish to continue with archery.

If you decide to join CMO Bowmen we offer a free New Members Programme, where as part of our membership services, you can use the same training equipment for the following four Saturdays whilst you sort out your own equipment.

There will also be other club members available to offer help and advice about buying and setting up your own equipment.
